Water-treatment problems are easiest to solve when the investigation separates symptoms from causes. “High conductivity,” “scale” or “high chemical consumption” are observations; each can have several root causes.
Problem 1: conductivity is increasing
Check make-up conductivity first. Then verify blowdown valve operation, conductivity-controller calibration, flow measurement and water losses. A high value may reflect a source-water change rather than a controller failure.
Problem 2: scaling is appearing
Identify the deposit where possible. Review cycles, pH, hardness, alkalinity, silica, temperature, inhibitor feed and suspended solids. Do not assume every deposit requires more inhibitor.
Problem 3: corrosion rate increased
Look for changes in pH, chloride/sulfate concentration, inhibitor residual, microbiological activity, process leaks and shutdown conditions. Inspect for localized pitting as well as average coupon weight loss.
Problem 4: chemical consumption is much higher than expected
Compare actual tank-level change with dosing-pump setting. Check concentration/density assumptions, pump calibration, leakage, siphoning, flow changes and manual additions. A wrong concentration entry can create a large apparent discrepancy.
Problem 5: RO differential pressure is rising
Review pretreatment performance, cartridge-filter differential pressure, SDI/turbidity where used, microbiological control and normalized RO trends. Rising pressure drop often suggests fouling or blockage, but the foulant should be identified before cleaning chemistry is chosen.
A simple troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the measurement is accurate.
- Compare with the historical trend.
- Check mechanical equipment and flow.
- Check water chemistry and source-water changes.
- Check chemical feed and product concentration.
- Identify deposits or contamination where possible.
- Correct the root cause and document the result.
Good troubleshooting is disciplined comparison. Keep operating data, chemical usage and laboratory results in one place so changes can be connected to events.
