Cooling tower chemicals are often grouped together, but they solve different problems. A reliable program normally combines products rather than asking one chemical to control scale, corrosion, microbiology and suspended solids at the same time.
Scale and corrosion inhibitors
These formulations may contain phosphonates, polymers, phosphates or other components depending on the program. Their job is to reduce mineral deposition and/or support protective corrosion-control films. The chosen chemistry must match water quality and metallurgy.
Oxidizing biocides
Oxidizers such as chlorine- or bromine-based products can provide broad microbiological control. Their effectiveness is influenced by pH, demand, contact time and contamination. Residual targets should come from the approved program rather than a generic rule.
Non-oxidizing biocides
Non-oxidizing products are often applied intermittently and can complement an oxidizing program. Rotation may be used where appropriate to improve control. Product selection requires attention to discharge limits, compatibility and site-specific microbiology.
Dispersants
Dispersants help keep fine solids and precipitated material from adhering to surfaces. They do not replace filtration or basin cleaning. Where suspended solids are high, side-stream filtration and mechanical housekeeping may be equally important.
How the pieces work together
A typical program might use a continuous inhibitor/dispersant feed, automatic blowdown and a separate microbiological control program. The treatment supplier should define dosing, monitoring and control limits based on the system.
What to monitor
Track product consumption against make-up volume and operating hours. Sudden changes can indicate pump problems, leaks or controller issues. Where residual testing is applicable, compare test results with the expected feed rate and system conditions.
Always review SDS information and chemical compatibility before changing products. Never mix oxidizers, acids or other treatment chemicals unless the procedure has been specifically designed and approved for that combination.
